Under normal conditions, the biological processes that take place in our body at any moment continue to work in their own routines. However, sometimes an infection or a more serious illness activates our body’s alarm system. At such times, blood tests can provide important clues about our health status.

The CRP (C-Reactive Protein) test is one of the most important blood tests used for this purpose. Produced by the liver, this protein is released into the blood when the immune system reacts to infections, trauma, or chronic diseases.

A high level of CRP in the blood is usually associated with an inflammatory process in the body. The CRP test is used to determine whether there is an inflammation-related condition in the body, rather than to diagnose a disease.

What is a normal CRP level?

CRP levels are usually low in healthy individuals. Whether this level is low or not is evaluated according to a certain reference range. Although this value may vary between laboratories, the generally accepted CRP values are as follows:

0 – 5 mg/L: This is the range considered normal. Values in this range indicate no significant inflammation in the body.

5 – 10 mg/L: Values in this range can be interpreted as a sign of mild inflammation in the body, but usually do not indicate a serious illness.

10 – 100 mg/L: Values in this range may indicate acute infections, injuries, or moderate inflammation.

100 mg/L and above: This may indicate serious infections, autoimmune diseases, or severe trauma.

The CRP value in blood tests alone is not sufficient to make a correct conclusion. For an accurate assessment, a CRP interpretation should be made in combination with the person’s general health status and additional test results.

What does elevated CRP mean?

An elevated CRP indicates that an inflammatory process has started in the body. However, the cause of this inflammation cannot always be identified. Elevated CRP levels can be a symptom of acute or chronic diseases and usually require a detailed evaluation by a physician. Sometimes mild CRP elevations can be caused by a temporary infection, while other times they can be a sign of serious illness. Therefore, additional tests and a doctor’s evaluation are important to understand why the CRP level is elevated.

What Causes Elevated CRP?

CRP levels can be elevated due to many different conditions, from infections to chronic diseases. Some common causes of elevated CRP levels can be listed as follows:

Bacterial and viral infections: Bacterial infections can cause a rapid and significant increase in CRP levels.

Autoimmune diseases: Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus can lead to elevated CRP levels as the immune system attacks its own tissues.

Chronic inflammatory diseases: Intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can increase CRP levels.

Cardiovascular diseases: High CRP levels can be one of the indicators of atherosclerosis and heart attack risk.

Injuries and post-operative processes: The body responds with an inflammatory response during the healing process after an injury or surgery, which can raise CRP levels.

Obesity and metabolic syndrome: Conditions such as overweight and insulin resistance can cause low-grade chronic inflammation and increase CRP levels.

A detailed medical evaluation by a specialist physician is necessary to understand why the CRP value is elevated.

Which Diseases are Symptoms of Elevated CRP?

Elevated CRP is not considered a disease on its own. However, an elevated CRP value can be a symptom of different diseases. Typically, CRP levels rise in diseases associated with inflammation and the immune system. The diseases most commonly associated with elevated CRP levels are the following:

Infectious diseases: Bacterial and viral infections can cause a significant increase in CRP levels.

Rheumatic diseases: Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis have elevated CRP levels.

Heart diseases: High CRP levels are associated with cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke.

Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases: CRP levels are elevated in diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Cancer: Some types of cancer can cause an increase in CRP levels, but it is not considered a marker on its own.

The CRP test is used as an auxiliary test in the diagnosis of these diseases, but additional tests should be performed for a definitive diagnosis.

When should a CRP test be performed?

A CRP test is a blood test usually ordered by doctors to test for inflammation in patients. This test is performed in the presence of certain symptoms or when deemed necessary by the attending physician to diagnose certain diseases. Here are some situations where the test is required:

When an infection is suspected: A doctor may order a CRP test if there are symptoms such as high fever, weakness, and chills.

In the diagnosis and follow-up of rheumatic diseases: In autoimmune diseases, a CRP test can be performed to assess the activity of the disease.

To determine the risk of cardiovascular diseases: High CRP levels can be considered a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

In postoperative follow-up: A CRP test can be performed in the postoperative period to monitor the development of infection.

The result of this test should be evaluated together with the patient’s general health status.

Is High CRP Dangerous?

Although elevated CRP is not a disease on its own, in some cases it may indicate serious health problems. Short-term increases that are not very pronounced are usually temporary and do not indicate a significant problem.

In some cases, however, a rise in this value may indicate more serious problems such as chronic inflammation or heart disease. In particular, CRP levels above 100 mg/L can be linked to serious infections, inflammatory diseases, and even some types of cancer. Therefore, the cause of increases in CRP levels should be meticulously investigated.

How Many Days Do CRP Blood Test Results Take?

The CRP test is a test that gives fast results. Most laboratories provide test results on the same day or within 24 hours at the latest. However, of course, the intensity of the hospital and therefore the laboratory can be effective in preparing the test result. In private laboratories or some hospitals, test results can be obtained within a few hours, whereas in some public hospitals, this can take up to 1-2 days, depending on the intensity.

After receiving the CRP test result, the best approach is to have the test results evaluated by a specialist doctor and, if necessary, to request additional tests.

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes 23 seconds While we are busy with the hustle and bustle of daily life, our body continues to function like a highly complex facility without us even realizing it.
