ToggleChin Aesthetics
Chin esthetics, also known as genioplasty, is a type of maxillofacial surgery and is the preferred surgical procedure for correcting jaw deformities that occur in cases of malocclusion, protrusion and misalignment of the jaw. This type of chin deformity can cause both aesthetic and functional problems. To correct this problem, the option of aesthetic chin surgery can be considered. This procedure, which can improve the shape and size of the lower part of the chin, i.e. the chin tip or jawline, can give not only the chin but the entire facial structure a new and more aesthetic appearance.
Ideal candidate characteristics for chin aesthetics
Chin aesthetics surgery, which differs significantly from alloplastic jaw implants and fillers, is an invasive procedure that may be preferred for the correction of severe jaw deformities. The characteristics of jaw deformities that can be corrected with the chin aesthetics surgery are as follows
- An excessively prominent chin that requires bone reduction,
- A chin that is too long or too short,
- Macrognathia
- Microgene
- Retrogenia,
- Transverse asymmetries or horizontal deformities.
However, if there is a problem with any of the following, then chin aesthetics surgery is not appropriate:
- Periodontal disease,
- A protruding lower lip,
- Long teeth in a short lower jaw,
- If there are other anomalies in the roots of the teeth.
The operation can be divided into two main categories in terms of how it is carried out:
Forward or backward displacement of the jawbone (genioplasty): This can be used to change the jawline and facial profile by moving the jaw forward or backward.
Jaw bone shaping: This is a surgical procedure to correct or change the shape of the chin. It is usually used to make the tip of the chin more or less prominent. The most common procedure to shape the tip of the chin is a horizontal osteotomy, where the bone is cut horizontally.
Is chin aesthetics surgery risky?
Chin aesthetics surgery is a major operation and carries various risks and side effects. The main risks and side effects are as follows
- Bleeding,
- Redness, bruising
- Swelling at the surgical site
- Sensitivity and pain
- Infection
- Bone resorption
- Allergic reaction to implant material
- Non-union of bone segments after osteotomy
- High risk of injury causing permanent sensory changes in the mental nerve
Recovery after chin aesthetics
Post-operative pain is to be expected. In the first few days, painkillers recommended by the doctor should be used to reduce the severity of the pain. Cold compresses are also effective in reducing pain. After 1 week, most of the pain will be gone. At this point, you can return to your normal activities. However, it is still necessary to lie on your back with your head elevated with a pillow for the first 1-2 weeks after the operation.
Recovery time may vary depending on the type of surgery, the patient’s general health and whether any complications occurred during the surgery. If there are no complications, you can return to work after 1 week. It will take a few weeks for the swelling to go down.
